A rising jazz talent from Azerbaijan, Ulviyya has been singing since she was 7. She began her career in the ‘Beri Bax’ musical group, led by Rauf Babayev. Since then she has been heard performing at a number of venues in Baku, most commonly at the Jazz Centre. She has been a long time collaborator with pianist and winner of the 2009 Montreaux Jazz Festival Isfar Sarabski. Ulviyya sings jazz with accents of local rhythms and a soulful, yet optimistic sound. Her influences include jazz standards, bossa nova, soul, and traditional music from the Caucasus. Her music fuses these styles to create a unique, personal sound.
Azerbaijan is an ancient nation situated beneath the Caucasus Mountains and next to the Caspian Sea. It has a long tradition of hospitality and openness to outside ideas and cultures. Whether through history (Persian, Russian, and Soviet empires), commerce (the Silk Road), or today’s pace of globalization, Azerbaijan is a blend of a number of world influences. This is particularly true in music. Musicians such as Uzeir Hajibayov (opera), Gara Garayev (ballet), and Vagif Mustafazade (jazz) took international musical forms and adapted Azerbaijani themes and rhythms to them. Today, musicians like Ulviyya are carrying on the tradition of preserving traditional themes and using the numerous music influences in Azerbaijan to develop new unique sounds to connect to a widening audience in many countries.
